My name is Mazen Refae. I am a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine student at Cairo University with interests in microbial ecology, mycology, genomics, wildlife health, and conservation. I enjoy combining laboratory research, computational approaches, environmental experience, and fieldwork to investigate biological systems. Outside of research, I enjoy hiking, bird watching, and video games.

Education

2025–present   B.V.M.S., Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University, Egypt
2022–2025   STEM High School for Boys, 6th of October, Egypt

Executing Projects

  1. Comparative Phylogenomics of Scedosporium and Lomentospora Investigating phylogenetic relationships and species boundaries among Scedosporium and Lomentospora using whole-genome sequencing and constructing a phylogenetic tree.
  2. Alzheimer’s Disease and Posterior Cortical Atrophy Differentiation Comprehensive literature review examining FDG-PET, fMRI, and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers for differentiating amnestic Alzheimer’s disease and posterior cortical atrophy at early stages (Lumiere Education Research Program, high school).
  3. Wastewater Arugula Integrated physical, chemical, and biological wastewater-treatment approach for producing freshwater suitable for agricultural applications, incorporating an Arduino-based sensor and irrigation system (high school).
